PC goes directly to standby when powering up

I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue or not. This
problem just started. When I turn on my desktop, it
starts to boot up for at most a second or two and then the
fans and disc activity stop. The power on light starts to
flash as though it is in standby mode. Using the keyboard
or mouse does not make the computer continue to boot. The
reset button has no effect. I have to hold down the power
button for 4-5 seconds to get the computer to shut off and
try again. After 2-25 tries, I am able to get it to boot
normally.

Screen saver and hibernate are both disabled. The power
scheme is 'always on.' There is a feature in BIOS that
powers down the hard drive after a period of inactivity.
I have this disabled. None of these settings have changed
recently. No software (not even Windows Updates) were
installed immediately before the problem started.

I took a look at the switch itself and there are no
obvious problems there.

As you can imagine, this can be pretty frustrating. Can
anyone suggest what I can do to resolve this?

I'll check back here, but if someone wishes to e-mail me,
just remove the 7's from my e-mail address.

TIA,
Chris

If you are not afraid of opening the case, pull the power plug, pop the
cover and reseat everything, Cables, cards etc. Then try again.

Thanks, Bob. I waited till I had to do a cold boot because
I was reluctant to power down in case it didn't work.
(BTW, someone else suggested that I might need to reseat
the RAM.) One thing I forgot about was that my wife moved
the PC to another room right before the problem started. I
did what you suggested and it booted up on the first try.
However, I shut it down again last night and the problem
has recurred. The computer won't boot at all now.

Any other ideas/suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris

The PC happen to get dropped on the floor during the move? Is it
exhibiting the same symptoms as before? With the cover off determine if
any components are not starting.(HD, Fans-including CPU fan and
powersupply fans, LED's on mother board) but it sounds like something is
broken in the circuitry traces or the connectors.
