Hi, I have XP Pro, Pentium 4, 1.5 Ghz, 384MB RAM. All was running fine until
last evening. All of a sudden when doing something, anything, the computer
would come to a virtual standstill about 10 minutes after booting up. I
tried system restore, using msconfig/selective start-up, and even increased
the page file memory to 2000/2500. I also tried disabling the screensaver. I
noticed when the pc is running fine, my Task Manager says the page file
usage history is in the 100 to 200 mhz range, then all of a sudden it will
spike to 1.29Ghz, and stay steady for several minutes. It seems to
eventually return to the lower values, just to spike again in a few minutes.
The spike is a sudden straight line up in the graph, and it stays there
level at 1.29, then a straight drop. It seems trying to click in the taskbar
slowly gets you out of the freeze, and constantly doing something on the PC
helps somewhat to keep it unfroze. However if I leave my PC for a few
minutes and then go back to it, everything's froze again. I have Grisoft AVG
which I ran several times, as well as trojanscan.com, which I just read
about in my search for a remedy. No virus or trojan detected. I have no
adware thanks to Adaware as well as Spybot Search and Destroy. What could be
causing this and what should I try next? Thanks much,
Dan
