PC Fan Going Crazy

The fan on my PC ramps up really loud every couple of minutes. It
sounds like an airplane about to take off. I've cleaned it out so it
has good air flow. Any idea what might be wrong? I'm running XP. Is
there freeware that would allow me to monitor my PC fan speed and
temperature? I wonder if it thinks it's getting too hot. It shouldn't
be hot at all, relatively speaking. This is really getting to be
annoying, though.

Any thoughts?

well,

your pc may actually
be getting hot.

you could open task
manager and monitor
the process tab read outs.

it's likely you will see
your processor spike for
a period of time which will
then run your fan.

you can also remove the
side panel to the pc and allow
free air to flow in naturally or
point a desk fan at it, which might
also help minimize the fan
run time.....

Is this a desktop or a laptop?

Which fan? PC's contain at least 2 and often have 3 or 4.

If it is the CPU fan replace it immediately.
If it is the Power Supply fan it should be replaced. It is possible
to do so but does require some care and a bit of work. If you are
not familiar with working on electronics at the component level then
your cheapest option would probably be to replace the entire power
supply, even if you need to get the repair shop to do so.
If it is the video card cooling fan, auxiliary case fan, or
motherboard chipset cooling fan then replace at a.s.a.p.

Good luck

Mine does that with the simplest of games or movies.. it's just the new
design where the fans are variable speed depending on the temperature of
the mobo and graphics card processors.

John,

I am having the same problem with my Shuttle X. The problem occured when
Vista was loaded, and I don't have a solution.
