Well, next to nothing anyway.

I've just put in a new X1950 pro, and a new hard drive. The PC no longer turns on. Now boot screen, no posting, no power, nothing. Just the occasional flash of an led, but for no longer than a second.

And then the life is gone again.

I've tried rebuilding, putting the old parts back in, switching a few things around. Nothing. Any ideas?

Just a quick thought, Just make sure the jumpers on the new HDD are not set the same as the other device on the same IDE port

ie

Primary master
Secondary master both set as Master

Gotta go out now but im sure someone else will try help

Sound like your PSU is not powerful enough.

Bear in mind the 1950 carries a recommendation for at least a 450w psu. With a new hard drive too, it is probably not powerful enough.

Could you give us more details of your setup please, including psu wattage?

64+ 3800 X2 S939
1 gb DDR 3200 Kingston ram

New 160gb sata + old 80gb sata
New X1950 pro

420w tagan power supply

The usbs are all powered, but nothing else.

Ta.

i would get a beefier PSU
double check to see that everything is plugged in.

Would a psu below the required wattage mean that the system still wouldn't work after taking out the new parts? Would trying the new components break a fuse or something?

To be honest I think it should probably work anyway. The 450w is a guideline, and generally you can go below it.

It all depends on the psu you have.

Do you have another one the you could try?

Any other suggestions are welcome by the way because I could be completely up the wrong tree.

The only other PSU I have is a 20 pin rather than 24, so I don't think I can do anything with that,,,

If there is no power going into the board the directions all point toward the PSU.

I got a Tagan 420W and so far so good.

Did you try changing that cable that runs between the pc and plug?

No he said some LEDs work occasionally, which could still eman that there is not enough power. I find it unlikely though.

Right. Well I've taken the whole thing apart. Right until I had an empty case. Put it all back together. I'm now installing Vista on that new drive. Thanks for the help, sorry for slightly wasting your time!

So was there an actual hardware issue (anything faulty?) or did you just stab at the depths of your computer, and blind luck solved it? ;)

You would be suprised how often that works!

The same happened to a mates pc a few months back, It randomly died. I pulled everything out, reseated everything, powering on each time to find the faulty hardware. I ended up putting it all back together and it was fine and has been ever since.....
PC's...you gotta love 'em. :p

Just today, I upgraded a few bits and bobs. When I snapped on the front cover to my Lian Li case, the PC died

I tried everything and was getting really worried I'd blown something expensive.

Eventually disconnected main multi-pin power connector from PSU to mobo, reconnected and all worked well.

Nope, I haven't got a clue why or how

sounds like you had a power surge - the multi-pin connector cut power and before you can use them again - they must be switched off at the wall
i belive thats what happened to u

Blind lucck is exactly it. I was putting it all back together, carefully touching the little power switch things with a screwdriver, to see when it stopped working. And it never stopped working.

I did have a little panic when it didn't turn on after I'd finished putting cables back into it. Then I decided to turn on the power supply.
