Hello,

Does this board support PCI express video cards? And is there an advantage
using this type of card over an AGP card?

Also am I better off with an ATA133 or and ATA150 hard drive for this board?

Thanks,

Mark

No, that board doesn't support PCI Express.

You mean, PATA/IDE versus SATA? SATA would be faster, all else being equal..

The board is a Dual Xeon board that has a Promise SATA RAID controller
built into it. The board does not make a good game machine, but it does
make a great low end server.

The SATA controller is fast and works well.

I see you've posted quite frequently to threads regarding the PC-DL, so
I assume you have more than casual experience with this board.

Any experience with the P2B-DS?

I ask because most of my systems run dual PIII-S processors on P2B-DS
boards - currently entirely fit for purpose, but will need to be updated
at some point. When the time comes, obviously I would prefer to replace
them with something of at least equal stability, reliability, and
longevity - although I concede that may well be unrealistic.

Would the PC-DL meet my requirements, in your opinion?

The PC-DL Deluxe is a GREAT board, we've got 40+ of them running as
everything from web servers to large database servers with 1.3TB of disk
space. We've not had one fail yet.

The only problem is that the board is being replaced. I can't remember
the replacement board, but my vendor is telling me there is a newer one
out.

I personally own a few of them in my home, love them.

Since you didn't say what you are doing I can't say if they would fill
your need. If you are running Dual P/III systems, even a Single Xeon or
a Single P4/3.2Ghz/HT with a 2mb cache would fit.

Thanks for all the replies.

Leythos,

Do you think this will make a good machine for doing 3d work with?

Leythos,

Not sure, there are so many 3D applications that it's hard for me to say
with so little information.

I like the PC-DL Deluxe and use them for very high-end workstations and
low end servers. I run Windows 2003 Standard Edition on them and it
works very nicely. I've not run Windows XP on them, but I suspect that
it would work well.

If your 3D app spools files out during the rendering, then you might
want to consider your Drive performance - like having a separate drive
for the destination, one not used for anything except to hold the output
from the app.

You might also need to consider a quality video card.

You might also need to consider getting the CPU's with the larger cache,
but that also more that doubles the cost of the CPU.

That's a good sign. How long have you been running them? Most of my
P2B-DS boards have run 7x24 since 1998. None have failed yet, despite
numerous upgrades and modifications required to support said upgrades.

Not a problem for me, I don't plan on buying new. I prefer something
tried and trusted.

Nope. My typical workload is frequent switching between a large number
of 2D apps, while several CPU intensive tasks run in the background.
Foreground responsiveness, especially during context switching, is
unacceptable when running on a single processor - and HT makes little
difference. I need real SMP. My dual PIII-S processors are more than
adequate - but I'm occasionally running into the 1GB physical RAM limit
of the P2B-DS. If I update, it'll be to avoid swapping, not because I
need more CPU cycles - but stability is paramount.

I have one Dual Celeron BP6 with 500 Mhz Celeron's that's been running
since the day the board came out - except for one PSU failure, but it
runs a small website and a small SQL database for the customer 24/7/365
for years.

I have a Compaq ML350 Dual P3/1ghz with 1.7GB RAM, it's a beast, but it
also runs 24/7 with Windows 2003 Standard and Exchange 2003 (use to run
2000/2000)....

If you buy good hardware it just keeps running - not to mention the
Commodore PET2001 from the late 70's that still works fine.

As I mentioned before the PC-DL Deluxe has been very reliable for me -
just make sure that your Xeon's are matching units.
