Hi

We have a bunch of windows xp pcs connected via a hub. Yesterday suddenly
one of the PCs disappeared from the network and is not accessible from other
pcs. The lights on the hub are fine i.e. one light for each pc is on. I have
also changed the hub in case one of the port was faulty. I have also changed
the cable for the concerned PC. No luck. I am now thinking either a dodgy
network card or may be a virus or hack attack although I have no reason to
suspect any of those except that I have tried everything else.

What can this be?

Thanks

Regards

Can the PC see itself, in network neighbourhood?

Check it is on the correct workgroup and has all the correct protocols.

Win2k and XP have a "feature" called "automatic private IP addressing"
(APIPA) that is intended to allow Windows to self-configure an IP address
in the absence of a DHCP server on the network. The problem that
sometimes arises is that if the comutper is unable to contact the DHCP
server when it boots or renews its address lease, it will assign itself an
IP address from the block 169.254.x.x. This likely means that it will be
configured to an address not recognized by your network and therefore be
isolated from the rest of the machines.

Check to see what IP address the machine is using and make sure it is one
covered by your network.
