Hey

So, i was happily surfing on the internet the othet night, when all of
a sudden my pc just shut off, no warning at all. Now it won't power up
at all. I took everything out apart from CPU and M/B still no luck. So
i automatically thought my PSU had failed, so i went out and bought
another 450w, came home plugged the badboy in, and hey
presto..nothing. Gutted could be a word i'd use.

Now i'm at a loss of what to do, i have no spare parts, i.e a m/b or
cpu to test, i have no cash to buy any new parts. What could be the
problem, from reading through some posts people mention using a
voltage tester which i havn't got.

The m/b and cpu are only a few months old..

core2duo 2.2ghz(irrc)
XP pro sp2
450w power
Nvidia 6600GT
Asus motherboard (i forget the model, but it supports both AGP and PCI-
E)

Help me please! I can't survive without the tinternet at my beck and
call!

TIA

I forgot to mention, when i do press the power button, the PSU and CPU
fans turn for a split second, but then they stop and stay stopped.

Just to make sure I read this right, you took all components out besides
motherboard and cpu? You sai you tried a different PS. That makes me suspect
either motherboard or a grounding Issue. Make sure your cpu Is still seated
correctly. Make sure your fan is seated so the cpu Isn't overheating. Check
to make sure your motherboard hasnt shifted a bit and grounding out. After
checking all of this, remove everything from the motherboard except video,
cpu, and a stick of ram and see what happens.

Yes thats right.

Yea me too, although my limited experience is nothing to go by.

correctly. Make sure your fan is seated so the cpu Isn't overheating.

If overheating was the case, then at least it should power up, until
it overheats again, unless the cpu is fried.
Checkto make sure your motherboard hasnt shifted a bit and grounding out.

I will try that when i go back home, but my pc was in the same
position as it always has been when it died.
After checking all of this, remove everything from the motherboard except video,
cpu, and a stick of ram and see what happens.

Already done that and its a big fat nothing.

You said you bought a 450w PSU. But did you buy a good name brand one?
Your symptoms point to a bad or under powered PSU. What brand did you
buy? If it's not a good one take it back and buy a name brand with
better specs.

Doesnt take long for a cpu to shut down from overheating... hmm... man take
a few minutes... try bypassing the power on switch on your case. After
that... Pull the MB and inspect the standoffs and make sure none are
grounding out. You got onboard video or an extra agp card to test that?

Try just the motherboard ... No video card, no RAM, only CPU.
See if the fans stay on.
My video board shorted out once and pretty much killed everything.
(When I put it in another mobo with a stronger PSU, it blew a trace on
that motherboard. Ouch.)

If you are sure that the replacement PSU was working properly, then your
motherboard has died.

The standoffs are supposed to ground out, that's why the mainboard
holes have solder around them.

Reality folded in on itself, and somewhere the following words from

I wouldn't have swaped the power supply so quickly. Falling power
ususaly causes memory curruption, BSoDs, and other soft fails.

It sounds like CPU overtemp protection...

Double check that your thermal compound is properly applied and your
CPU cooler is installed correctly. If there is a slight crack or it
wasn't seated correctly the compound will boil away in time causing
the CPU to heat up rather quickly on boot.

I've seen this in several systems I've repaired reacently. It's these
mass-market retailers that get boxes with sloppy construction. You
know, with only a small drop of Silver on one corner of the die, or
in one system the cooler was reseated *sever times*, you know, for
*luck* and such. }:8(

It's something to check before you rule it a bad mainboard...

Well, after a bit off mesing, it seems my graphics card is the
problem. I unplugged everything, with just the CPU and Motherboard,
the system now powers up. With everything else plugged in and powered
it still powers up, but if i plug the power into my graphics card, it
doesn't power up :(

I've just nipped out and got a cheapo card to test, so i'll report
back when i've done this.

x'd fingers.

Well, i'm back up and running, got myself a mx4000 (lol) for £25, it
doesn't require any power so im good to go, although i don't think i'll
be playing any cs:source for awhile ;(

If you had bought a decent PSU you would still be able to run your old
graphics card. I don't know why people insist on crappy PSU's.

Hmm, strikes me as strange. My old psu was 230w and never had any
problems with my g/c. Then my pc dies on me, everything worked ok apart
from my g/c. So to me that means my g/c is the problem not my 450w psu.

Btw, whats the diff between a crappy psu and a decent one?
