Hi, I have a second PC that is not starting up, no POST beep, HD flashes on
then nothing, fan runs. I can hold in the stop button for however many
seconds and the fan/power stops. Where do I start looking for the problem.
I have no spare mobo or CPU. Powercord is ok.

Good Luck - this is a true hardware error - just because the PC harddrive
may have WinXP installed, doesn't make it an XP issue, you need the PC
BIOS/CMOS to at least boot and recognize the hardware, find the boot device
and read the boot code to start the boot sequence of the OS. You may wish
to try the hardware manufacturer's help web site, barring that, if you have
a friend that is an PC electronics expert, they may can check a few thinks,
if both of those options fail, either pay to a professional PC repair person
to look at it, salvage it for parts or send it to a recycle center.

Hi Joe,

I'd check/replace the power supply unit first. This is symptomatic of weak
voltage.

Do a barebones check. Remove all the cards, except the video card if there
is one. No mouse or keyboard. No floppy or hard drive connected in any
manner. No printer or any other external peripheral connected except the
video monitor. Clear the cmos by removing the battery, or use the
motherboard jumper (see the manual for the motherboard).
If working, the bios should show a keyboard error on the screen. Post your
results if good. If same symptoms, I would abandon it for monetary reasons.
