Can I still recover the footage, if the PC shut down
after Movie Maker had processed the footage from the
webcam, but before it was saved "officially???"

Hi there,

Probably not....but don't take my word for that. There may be an answer of
www.papajohn.org that will help.

In general such files get a temporary name that is exclusive to the program
managing it. That file may be visible somewhere in Movie Makers directories,
but if it has not got what is called an EOF (End of File) marker, it will be
very difficult to retrieve it. To try retrieving such a file you would need
something like the Norton Utilities "UnErase" routine, where at the
appropriate stage you would be able to see a list of recoverable files and
proceed from there.

It is also likely that because the file was not saved to a proper file name
the file exists in a raw state and because MM closed incorrectly the file
could have been overwritten just by powering your computer up again.

If this is VERY important, there are companies around the world who have the
expertise to recover the file even though the worst of the above has
occured. It will however burn a hole in your pocket. I have used a forensic
science lab to do this...and its expensive. But as you may be reading this
on the machine that closed down, it is may already be to late for that
option.
