Hi,
A friend's pc has picked up a virus(?) but before he can complete a

Thanks for any help.

You need to determine what virus he/she is infected with but since we
dont know this you can try the following. Use procedure 1 on my
website - if you have a McAfee license you can also use procedure 2.
You can also use McAfee Stinger. Details of this are also on the 'Got
a virus?' page.

If the computer ios WinXP, enter the following caommand line to stop the shutdown process...

shutdown -a

Then complate the scan.

I think he may be referring to the actual scan process being
terminated by a resident virus Dave.

Thanks Ian and Dave,
Sorry for not making the problem clearer - I meant to say that the
actual PC closes down and needs to be rebooted.

This may be obvious, sorry if it is....
Have you tried to scan the system in safe mode?
F8 during bootup will get you there.

Thanks for the tip - not sure if it has been tried or not but will
pass it on.
