PC Can't Remember A Thing

The only problem I've EVER had with my PC is that it
won't remember anything! I've had it since Oct 2001 and
it's always been very dependable but.... Autocomplete
has never worked nor has password recall and, sometimes,
even folder settings are lost. When I load blank CD media
and click Always Do The Same Operation, my answer is
forgotten as soon as I insert the next CD. I've
contacted MS since I know it's an XP problem and they
referred me to HP (since it's an OEM OS). HP told me to
make sure I enable autocomplete and password in IE. Duh!
I'm thinking that I've got a registry setting that's
loose (but which persists even after several non-
destructive system restores). Has anyone had a similar
experience? Any ideas for resolving this quirk?

Windows XP Home

This fix applies to Outlook and other programs that store passwords
in the Protected Storage System Provider sub-branch of the Registry.
It also corrects some issues with Internet Explorer and Autocomplete.
