To all the experts,
I have a HP Pavilion a255c PC with XP home edition SP1. The PC had problem
establishing internet connection recently probably due to some corrupted
system files. I ran anti-viruses software and cleaned up the affected files.
I deleted the ISP software and tried to re-install the software again. The PC
couldn't recognize the DSL modem and couldn't login the ISP web site. The
modem works fine with other PC.

I went on to open the 'Network Connections', then double clicked the
'WIreless Network Connection 2'. It opened the 'Status' window showing the
Activity The number of packets sent increased steadily, but the number of
packets received came in very slowly. I disabled and enabled the connection.
The same packet activity happened. I selected the ‘Support’ tab and try to do
‘Repair’. A window popped up saying that “The following steps of the repair
operation failed: Purging the DNS Resolver cache. Please contact your network
administrator or ISP.â€

I contacted the ISP but the technician asked me to call HP support. I did
on-line chat with HP support for an hour and couldn’t find out the problem. I
tried: 'ipconfig/flushdns' ,'ipconfig/renew' and ‘services.msc’. None worked.
Finally, the HP support advised me to re-cover the PC to factory
installation.

Please let me know if there is anything I can try before doing the factory
recovery.

Thanks in advance.

As a last-ditch effort, you might try running LSPFix
<http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>
which fixes a class of problems created by improper un-installs.
If that doesn't work, you will save a lot of time by backing up all
your files and use the factory recovery disks. Problems like this
can be fixed if you have the time and are so inclined, but if you
just want to get your computer working again, a restore can be the
fastest method.

HTH,
John

John,

I downloaded the LSPFix from the website. The software immediately gave me
an error indicating something wrong with the windsock2 registry. The website
guided me to the Microsoft web site which provided me the instruction to
re-install the windsock2. I then re-ran LSPFix without any incident. My
computer can hook up to the internet now.

Many thanks to your tip. Your help really saved me endless hours from doing
the otherwise.

Hi All,
When I closed the IE windown from the same PC, an error popped out:

IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error
The instruction at "0x01c391ac" referenced memory at "0x01c391ac". The
memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program....

The address in " " can be a different one at different time.

Please shed some light on how to fixt that.

Thanks,

DY

I'm glad you got your Network working again. LSPFix has helped a lot
of people.

I can't help you much with your IExplorer problem other than to
suggest that you switch to Firefox
<http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/>
or perhaps go to your control panel -> Add/Remove Programs-> select
Windows Internet Explorer, uninstall it, and then re-install it. If
you have IE7, I think an "uninstall" simply reverts you to IE6.

Thanks again for the feedback,
John
