I recently upgraded my heatsink and cpu-fan.
I switched it on, and got no monitor signal, no beep, and no starting.
Figured I had mulched the proc. or mb when i did the upgrade, but a
friend said it might not be the case.
After reading some newsgroups, removed all non-essential cards and
left it a day (read that sometimes just leaving it for a day can be
good).
Next day, powered up and screen came on and got nvidia bios, but thats
as far as it got. Fiddled about with some loose connections or
something - cant remember what, just to make sure.
Today I booted and got as far as lilo, then it froze. Rebooted, but
this time didnt get past video bios.
I left it a few hours, tried again, got into the bios, then it froze
there.
I have 2x256mb ddr sticks, so have tried with just one of each of
those to see if it's memory. but that doesnt make a difference.

Anyway, the fact I can get into setup, or to lilo, is that a sign that
processor is actually ok? what about the mobo? could it be just a
connection (obviously ive checked them etc) - could it be psu? i did
have to take it out to fit new heatsink/fan (big fan!), and put it
back.
Is the fact I cant get past the video bios on second+ retries
significant?

The specs:
-athlon 1800xp,
-some MSI mobo,
-256mb ddr - same prob with 2 diff chips on their own.
-gainford? geforce4,
-2 ide hd's connected, but problem same with them attached (obviously
cant get to lilo without the disks :] ).

Thanks,
Alex

maybe the board is shutting down because of the cpu fan

the bios might not detect one

or if it;s a lower speed and larger fan
some bios's need a "low fan rpm" update

why not try you old fan just to make sure nothing else might have gone wrong
