Hi,
I'm having trouble identifying why my pc becomes sluggish and almost
unbearable to use. Could it be a problem w/ IE 7? Have there been any other
complaints of this nature? I have Windows XP. When this happens I do disk
clean-up and registry manager, but it happens so often that I find myself
spending more time than not performing these tasks.

How do I find out what's causing a problem keeping in mind that I'm not a
computer expert?

Thank you. If you need any addl information to help pinpoint the problem,
please ask.

Christina

It would help to know the size of your HD and how much free space is
available.....how much RAM you have.
I assume you have run DiskCleanup......Chkdsk........Defrag.........Virus
Scan........Cleaned out the IE cache.
How to help on any of these is available under start...help and support

I'd start by checking the following whilst the PC is running slowly:

1. CPU usage in Task Manager. If CPU usage is high which processes are
causing it?

2. Available physical RAM (and what the total is). As before, if RAM is low
which processes are using the most?

3. Applications running at startup - disable any unwanted ones. Startup
Inspector is easy to use and free. AutoRuns is thorough, but less easy to
use.

4. Full virus scan.

What I wouldn't spend time doing:

1. Registry clean-up, unless you install/uninstall a *lot* of applications
or you are getting registry-related errors.

2. (To a point) hard drive defrag, unless you are installing/uninstalling a
lot of applications or you are creating/deleting a lot of files.

I also notice you have posted a question about iTunes and performance
issues. The latest version of iTunes does seem to be a bit of a resource
hog - I'm hoping (but not really expecting!) that this is something they'll
sort out in later releases. If iTunes is what is causing the problem disk
clean-up and registry maintenance isn't going to solve your issue.
