PC automatically switching its self on

You might have been hit by the blasterworm. You need to
get a patch, which you can download from the microsoft
site and also install a firewall to protect your work. I
understand that ZoneAlarm is also a good programme which
warns you of hackers and attacks, but I am not computer
literate... apparently you can try it for 30days... for
free.
 
I am using Windows Home XP on a Packard Bell Pentium 4.

You may have a setting in the BIOS to wake it up - say, if the phone
rings. Another possible explanation is that you have a task scheduled,
like a virus cleaner set to run at a certain hour.
