Is there a way for me to open, export or save a PBD (phone book) file from
a very old program to a text file? Every time I try various ways, a "file
unrecnognizable" or "file unsupported" warning appears. I am also unable to
import this PDB file directly from it's current program (PhoneBook 97) into
another contact management/phone book program for the same reason.

Can someone much wiser than me can help me move this PDB file of apx 300
names, addressese, etc. to a place where I can then import them into a more
updated contact management/phone book program (ie Chaos Manager, etc.).

All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance...Fran

Xandros, thank you, but what you related was for PDB files (Palm Document
Files), not PBD (phone book data files).

Xandros, yes I do have this program...PhoneBook 97 by Idyle. I do like this
program and it works with my XP. But I cannot find this company on the net
and I assume it no longer exists. I am also unable to discover if Idle
merged into another company and if they have an updated similar program.

ALL of my valuable contacts are stored there with lot of information on each
and I feel that I need to be able to save this database to a text file just
for safety and the ability to import it into another contact
management/address book program.

I do not know how to handle this and am grateful for your assisting me.

According to this page, you should be able to use the export function
(presumably to a .CSV file):

Hi Fran , if you google *PhoneBook 97 by Idyle* ( without asterisks)
you get at least 4 entries

Daave, thank you. But...While I am able import from a .CSV file, but it will
not let me export to one. Strange, but true... so I was hoping for a some
way to accomplish this or to be able to contact this seemingly now-dufunct
company...neither of which is happening so far. Any additional help on this
is appricated. Fran

Isn't there a Help file?

Perhaps there's something wrong with your program. If so, I would
uninstall and reinstall.

Daave, the Help file directs me to a Cannot Open this Page, since it was
online help originally. The program is installed correctly, it simply does
not give me an export to .csv file. In my directory there is a PBD data
file and a back-up data file. I cannot find the original company Idyle.com
anywhere or who owns them now, if anyone.

Any other ideas or discoveries are appreciated. Fran

Have you tried exporting it to a .cvs file? You should be able to open a
..cvs file in Excel and in most other address programs. I've downloaded and
installed the Phonebook 97 demo and it works for me to create a phonebook
and afterward use the Export function to create a .cvs file. I can then
import that .cvs file into my Palm OS Desktop for my Tungsten E2 and I can
open the file in Excel 2007 and in Excel 2002. I suspect it will open in
other versions of Excel. Any phone book or address program that can work
with .cvs files (and most can) should be able to read your backup.

I does seem that the company is no longer in existence. You may wish to
download a copy of the app from here
http://downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/business/pims__schedulers__and_contact_managers/pbpro97.zip
before it is gone.

The author of the program is Damien Ramé. I do not know him. I did a simple
google search for him and found him here

Contact information for him is at the bottom of this page

X..Thank you again very much. However, .the only export choices are for my
Phonebook '97 is Netscape Address Book, Netscape Bookmarks, IE Favorites &
Eudora Pro Address Book. Also, with these choices it says it will only
export the contact info that includes an email address, which mine do not
have. I am not given a choice to export to a .csv file. This program dates
back to the late '90's.

I wonder if and how I could open the PBD file in my directory. I tried
opening this with Excel and a couple other programs and the file was not
recognizable and it did not work for me. Is there any way to "convert" this
data? I also have a BAK back up file in my directory for PhoneBook '97.

Last, I wonder if you tried the PhoneBook '97 PRO edition to be able to
export date to .csv? I don't have the pro edition.

Your help is much appreciated. Fran
