Hello,

I think it would be a great idea for Microsoft to charge a fee each time a
user has to download an update from their site. What in the world would be
keeping them from doing it? You should have to pay a fee, something like 2
or 3 dollars each time an update or a patch for a Windows operating system
is issued, that is if you want to download it. If not, you take your own
chances.

Just think of all the poor Microsoft employee's who have to constantly work
on patches and updates and the such. These employees could all be given a
raise if a fee was imposed for updates and patches.

I guess I am writing this post in the hopes that someone that could help do
something about it is reading. That way, at least they will know that there
is a wide support base that would whole-heartedly pay anything that needed
to be paid in order to keep up to date.

It never hurts to let the employees of a company know that regular,
everyday, work hard for their money Joe's and Jane's, will gladly part with
some of that money each month when the updates and patches come out, just to
stay current and feel secure.

Releasing buggy software and then charging for the fixes isn't a very
good business strategy.

Hey, if you're rich and want to spend your money, send me some. Paying
for updates that fix the holes in Windows XP is absurd.

I'm still taking your posting TIC!!!!

Releasing buggy software and then charging for the fixes isn't a very
good business strategy.

Not to mentioned the bugs that exist in the "other" software (Server 2003,
Office etc.).

If MS would release a complete bug free version of Windows (unlikely) then
maybe.

Beside, isn't the next "major" release of Windows (Vista) just that?

No Yves, Vista is a whole new animal. It is not being billed as just a
service pack update, it is totally new. If you looked at things that way,
you could say XP was just an update for Windows NT.

There will still be patches and upgrades for Vista, there will always be
updates to every system that is ever made. So why not charge for them. I
think that this will and should be the wave of the future and I trust
Microsoft will implement something similar to what I am saying eventually.

You can rest assured that my silly little post here in this group will have
nothing to do with it, but it has already been mulled over. You could
probably bet on it. Microsoft and the people who run the company are no
dummies, if you constantly get updates from them like we all do, it is just
too great of a possible revenue source to pass up for too much longer.

Alias, the thing is, they were not really holes when XP shipped. They were
just possible holes that eventually did turn into real holes. So, how can
we expect Microsoft to just keep taking care of us for free forever without
generating some revenue off of it?

I think Genuine Advantage is a good first step towards implementing a pay
for patches system. They will work it out eventually and everyone will
think they are staying ahead of the game by paying for the patches and will
be glad to do it. Otherwise, you will just fall out of the loop as far as
being an up to date and protected computer user.

LOL! What's the difference?

I expect them to keep a program I paid good money for up-to-date, yes.

I think the WGA is insulting and should be eliminated.

No, only rich people who have lots of money *might* be "glad to pay for it".

Which, if you knew what you're talking about, will affect all other users.

So, when are you sending me the money?

And why don't we just pay the suicide bombers not to blow themselves up?
Probably cheaper than maintaining a whole homeland security beuacracy
and then we can get universal health care and actually pay for "No Child
Left Behind!"

Paying $200.00 for the top of the line Vista version, you should be expecting
that the software works. Why would you want to be "dinged" by MS for a
software fix that they "forgot" to fix when the software shipped.

There has been rumors that Microsoft was going to make Windows a "modular" OS
where you initially "pay" for the Boot module. Then, you need to buy the
individual modules you want to add to Windows. Some of the individual
licenses could be:

Gaming
Printing
Additional Hard drive per unit
Additional Memory
Additional processor license per processor
Modem
Internet access
Networking
CD/DVD access
CD/DVD writing
Addition monitor
USB configuration/access per device
Firewall
Anti Virus
Spyware
Disk Integrity repair
File Sharing
Printer Sharing
Windows Update subscription (yearly renew)
Windows license transfer (Retail version will get the OEM install restrictions
unless end-user buys the transfer rights!)

Anything/everything is possible but the question should be: Should Microsoft
"charge" for the updates? The only aswer, based on their "past" reputation:
NO!!!!!!!!

I think an even better idea would be if you and other like minded
individuals just started sending money to Microsoft regularly each month to
let them know how much you appreciate all the hard work they do. There are
probably so many of you that they could just give the OS away.

So, do you think the MVP's should start charging for their advice here
as well?
Just wondering....

Yeah, I guess Bill Gates may be down on his luck and not able to pay his
employees to fix the operating system he sells.

Hello, Do not think it is a good idea, from my income level, but I am sure
that the company has ongoing discussions concerning this possible future
revenue stream.
I do remember Cable TV and Teleco DSL early features and now with several
price tiers and filters.
I do not underestimate the modern business model greed in a non-competitive
arena. It does not need a monoploy simple all providers following the same
model.

Del¤+/Ctrl+¤/Alt¤+, what a great idea Mr. Profundity! Especially if they
sold the OS for lets say $AUD 2.00 (That's two Australian Dollars) or even
