path for history

Is there any way for me to assign where I want history kept (and searched
for) in IE6? I'd also like to do the same for my favorites. I would like to
put both paths into my briefcase for my laptop, so that I can just synch up
and have the same environment on desktop and laptop, without having to copy
paste between the two computers.

Thanks

Boris,

From an Windows XP system:

Start Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

The default path for "History" is set to "%USERPROFILE%\Local
Settings\History"

You may try redirecting that, just like the way you did for the "Favorites".

Note that I've NOT tested redirecting the History folder so far.

I'm not sure how to advise you on doing this successfully, or even if it is
possible.

This is controlled via the registry - one of the keys being:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

I haven't gone so far as to see where else such data is duplicated in the
registry, but at least it gives you a place to start.

thanks, Ramesh. It definitely affects it when I changed it. further
question, however, is whether you know how to enter a briefase path into it.
I am uncertain which part of the brieface's path name is part of the "user
profile" that appears in the path of the registry for favorites (haven't
gotten to trying the history), so when I changed it by just copying the path
from the briefcase's address bar (incidentally, it shows up as C:\Documents
and Settings\Boris\Desktop\Desktop\Misc\favorites) and replaced the registry
with %userprofile%\desktop. It's now not showing any favorites. Any idea
how to properly put that path into the registry path?

Boris,

I missed that "Briefcase" part. Though Briefcase maintains a copy of the
file, addional "database" is maintained/updated accordingly. Redirecting the
History folder and pointing it to the "Briefcase" location may not help
AFAIK. If you're using XP Professional, you may consider using "Offline
files" feature to sync your Favorites across the network.

Ramesh, thanks. Now I am a little more confused, but a little intrigued.
Any help you can offer on offline files would help.

I went throught the help section and overview of how to use offline files (I
did not know briefcase was no longer the only option in XP). I cannot see
any checkbox for using offline folders in my folder options, offline tab. So
I don't know where to go from there.

Any advice?

Boris,

Disable Fast User Switching, and you'll see the Offline files options.

good link, but again, another question pops up. I enabled the offline use on
both of my computers. However, as in this article and in Help, the next step
is "simply" (wink) to go to the files and folders I want offline and right
click them to enable that. I am not finding the option for offline use in
these shared resources. I had already had them set up to be shared (so I
could initially drag them, while on the laptop's desktop, from the desktop
machine's native folder to the briefcase on the laptop). So I know they are
shared out for me to be able to access them from elsewhere, but for this
offline stuff, neither from the laptop interface to the desktop drive, nor
from the desktop machine's explorer can I find the "use this folder offline"
sort of option.

Thanks for continuing my saga.

Boris,

See if my note here helps you sync the favorites, using Offline files.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/favshare.htm

Note that you can choose any of these two options for Synchronizing the
shared resource

- Synchronize all Offline files when logging on
- Synchronize all Offline files before logging off
