Has anyone solved this one yet?

I have been searching thru old newsgroup posts and have
seen a lot of people experience the same probem, but it
wasnt really fixed.

This is what I did:

Started with Windows 2000, SP2
Updaded to SP 3, rebooted,
Logged in, updated to IE6 SP1, rebooted,
Logged in, installed Windows2000-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe,
rebooted
logged in..... only blue desktop screen
no icons, start menu, task bar...
CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up task manager
No explorer.exe running
Tried doing a new task, and launching explorer.exe, no go.
Did a lot of searches, trying to figure out what to do.
Uninstalled the patch, rebooted
logged in, everything was good.
checked for the blaster virus again, wasnt on computer
checked vile permissions on winnt and winnt\system32 for
everyone read only, they werent, so i added them (note: I
checked a few other computers and they didnt have the
everyone group with read permission on those directories
either).
re-applied patch, rebooted,logged in
still empty desktop with no icons, etc.
renamed all these ie files (like shdocvw.dll) and
restarted, no change, still no desktop after i log in
try a different log in, no change
tried reinstalling ie while at blank blue screen... got a
cant load components error. tried running sfc(wouldnt run)

checked event viewer....
system
got a Com+ event system service hung during startup
lanmanserver invalid parameter
domain controller could not be contacted

application error
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during
its internal processing. HRESULT was ..../services.cpp.
or something.

Any ideas?

Josh, We have exactly the same problem but it is limited to certain
Dell GX150 Optiplix machines. It seems to have something to do with
the software on these machines because some of them have a recent
build and do not exhibit the problem. I also am at a dead end on this
one.

I, too am having the exact same problem. The Dell GX150's
just won't load a desktop after installing the 980 patch,
and now the 146 patch.
