just curious, I recieved an email today in my hotmail
email account that came from (e-mail address removed) and it
said this......

"Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now!
There are dangerous virus in the Internet now!
More than 500.000 already infected!"

and it included a patch.exe

The letter didnt seem very business like so I am curious
if its real or perhaps some bad bad thing? I noticed the
typo so now am worried..

Does anyone know anything about this? and if it is legit
then why wouldnt Microsoft send a more businesslike notice
so we could actually know that its legit!
Thanx,
Cat

CAT!! DO NOT OPEN IT!!!!

I received the exact same email, scanned the attachment
and found that it DOES Contain a Virus!! DO NOT OPEN
IT!!!

You are right! It is not business like and there is more
than one typo. If this had been from Microsoft, they
certainly would have been more professional about it.

Has anyone else received this??? I would imagine there
are more who have. I would like to know what to do about
this.

Cat,

Just for future reference ... Microsoft *never* sends patches or fixes as
attachments to emails. So, anytime you get one of these - with an
attachment - delete it immediately.

Thanks for sharing this information with me and everyone's response. I
was a little leary when I received the email today and almost opened it.
Thanks to searching yahoo! for patch.exe, I came upon this forum and
deleted it before I opened it. Thanks a bunch for the info.

I have recieved this same email several times. I don't believe
Microsoft would alert users in this manner. I have been sending it back
using reply or forward, but it still keeps coming. The safest thing to
do is just delete it. I also notified Yahoo about it, but haven't
recieved a reply yet.

Yea, I got the same e-mail. One of the worst and amature attempts I've
seen. Unfortunately, I am sure some have fallen for it.

I downloaded the attachment onto my UNIX box and opened it up. Here is
a bit of the end of the file.
