I keep getting an email from Microsoft saying I must
install the attachment, patch.exe immediately. It really
looks like it's coming from Microsoft, but this seems a
strange way of doing business. It's from
<[email protected]. I'm afraid to open the
attachment. Is it for real?

Rowdy;
It is NOT from Microsoft.
The attachment is a virus.
This has been around a short while.
Delete the Email and attachment immediately.

Microsoft sends security updates but NEVER with attachments.

On the rare occasion Microsoft sends a file, you would be expecting it
in advance and know exactly what it is.

Update your antivirus weekly.
Run it weekly.
Install or enable a firewall:

Do not open the attachment - it is fake.

DO NOT open the file--it is NOT from MS.
Microsoft NEVER sends unsolicited files by email.

It is a virus masquerading as MS security.
The current one circulating is dumaru.b

If by chance you did open the file:
From a post by Bill Sanderson MVP:
Here's where to get the removal tool:

Read the instructions completely, paying particular attention to the part
about System Restore on XP and Me.
