Pasting bookmarks in Firefox

M

ms

In Netscape, to paste a bookmark into a folder, open the folder,
position the cursor below the folder name, and it pastes under the
folder, indexed in order.

Not so in Firefox. In Firefox, there's a trick to positioning the cursor
(?) that I haven't found.

Where do you position the cursor so the pasted bookmark will look as
below:

Folder
pre-existing bookmark
pasted new bookmark

As a rider to your query, I'm in a total mess with Firefox bookmarks.

It imported my IE bookmarks, but put them in a separate folder below the
default folders. I'd like just to see my old IE bookmarks and links

I don't seem able to move them without wrecking them or losing them -
I'd just like to replace the whole Bookmarks folder with my Favorites
folder. (I've had to reimport a couple of times as they disappeared into
a black hole, so I must keep IE just to keep the bookmarks page)

If I try to bookmark a page with CTRL D it offers a choice of folders I
don't even recognise as either mine or the default Firefox bookmarks.

I've found my own bookmarks file, but if I set it as the home page it
comes up in a pretty useless form as just text and links.

Am I being mega stupid? Or is this a problem with Firefox?
Is there somewhere a simple explanation for muppets?

I know from other posts I'm far from alone in finding Firefox bookmarks
a big problem - can someone sort us out?

AFICT, when you "manage bookmarks", pasting on a pre-existing bookmark will
place the new bookmark just above it. So if your folder only has one
pre-existing bookmark, the new bookmark will be above it.

Another option is to simply drag the bookmark to *exactly* where you want it
to go.

Go to Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks, highlight what you don't want and hit
delete. Highlight the IE bookmarks but not the "Imported IE Favorites" (or
whatever the parent folder is called) and copy/drag them to the main
"Bookmarks" folder. Note: if you copied and pasted then you'll need to
delete the "Imported Favorites" folder when you're done.

You should see a dropdown arrow to the right giving you access to all
bookmarks folders.

Thanks for the reply to my post, I noticed it pasted above the desired
folder. I'll try drag/drop.

Another issue like Mike Ring's. Originally, when I first opened Firefox,
it cleverly imported the bookmark file from my Netscape. But since then,
I've added to my Netscape bookmark file. Today, I imported the updated
file to Firefox. Now in Manage Bookmarks, I have 2 files with the same
name, "Bookmarks for ...". I designated the new file as default, so
Firefox uses it.

I wanted to delete the original, so I renamed it. Still, the delete
option is greyed out. I deleted the contents, it still can't be deleted.

This is not a subfolder, its a incorrect duplicate of the main bookmarks
file.

How to delete it?

BEFORE you do that make sure that you have the bookmarks file that you
want to use.

Why not use your bookmarks file as....a bookmarks file ? No need to
have it as a home page.

Not a big problem here. In fact I notice something "new" with 9.1 (or
did I previously miss it ?). When going CTRL D there is now a drop
down option that shows the different categories one can put a
bookmark in. One of those categories is "Imported IE Favorites".

Regards, John.

Thanks Jordan, I was trying to move the whole IE folder into Bookmarks
in preparation for moving the contents into Bookmarks - I thought I'd
make the actual moves shorter; whatever, you've fixed it.
You should see a dropdown arrow to the right giving you access to all

I've finally seen the titchy little arrow which _does_ access my
bookmarks, but the big obvious dropdown arrow still accesses

psp
technical
music

which I now recognise as subfolders under "computers"; but theres a
helluva lot more subfolders under "computers that don't appear there,

I'll keep trying to sort it, but it would be nice to straighten out that
dialogue box!

I prefer to keep just a few heavily used URLs in the link, sorry, personal
toolbar, and I've got an awful lot of bookmarks.

The titchy arrow hwlped, and now I've got the openbook extension, so it's
comming good.

I've discovered - I think - that the folders that show when you pres CTRL D
are a sort of "recent document" memory, as when I'd done a bit od
reorganisation it contained the folders I'd moved stuff to; otherwise I'd
still have no idea where they came from.

What a baffling piece of work that is; I hope they get rid of it

You can put FOLDERS of bookmarks in the Personal Toolbar. And
subfolders in the folders.

Sou you'd have a folder "IE Favorites" that would drop down
when you clicked on it so you could browse for the one you
want.

Mozilla's bookmarks are vastly superior to IE's inept
handling. IE's poor bookmark handling was one of the reasons
I dumped it once I discovered Netscape.

You can with IE, but I prefer my folders to describe the contents, and have
subfolders and even more levels

I don't want an "IE" folder, just bookmarks - it defeats the object to keep
my old bookmarks in an IE folder, I don't have IE any more.

Mozilla's may be, I'm not sure about firefox, though I'll be the first to
admit it may just be familiarisation; but thise funny ones in the top
section of the dialogue box after a CTRL-d are baffling.

But not as baffling as tabbed browsing....

Hello

Mozilla's bookmarks are vastly superior to IE's inept
handling.

I don't doubt that it's true, but sweet jesus, the mozilla firefox
default book mark window is horrendous.

For example... if youve been adding stuff to the folder
freeware> sys utilities
and want to add a new category
for sale> bloated> ms products
it takes a half dozen clicks.

That and it lacks the pure simplicity of organizing your picks in the
favorites subdirectory

There is a question here... is there anything like the favorites
directory in MF so that I can organize the bookmarks?

Where canIi find the superior features of Mozilla's bookmarks, and why
are they so well hidden?

I'm using the following program. It's my database of links, that I also
use to update my website now and then.
It can import & export to and from every famous browser, like IE, Opera,
Mozilla, etc. When I switched from IE (MyIE) to Firefox, I had my
favorites in no time exported to Firefox.
