Paste does not work in Command Window

All,
Paste suddenly seems to have stopped working in the Command window in
my Vista system.
Configuration: Vista enterprise with SP1. UAC ON (I cannot disable
UAC because of corporate IT policy)
I am sure "Quick Edit" is enabled. I tried both "Right Click" and the
menu Edit -> Paste
option. It does not work even in Powershell. Paste works normally in
all other applications.

Paste also works fine if I copy from the same Command Window or even
from any other command window.
But I if try to copy from, say Notepad or Word, and try to paste on
any Command Prompt, nothing happens.
I can copy FROM any Command Prompt to any other application

I tried on normal as well as elevated (Admin) Command Prompts. Same
result. Does not work :-(

It used to work fine till about a month ago. I do not recollect any
major change that could have
caused this problem. Any clues?

Thanks in advance for any help!

-Regards,
Venkat

Use CTRL + V. That always works..

Mike,
No jokes please! Have you ever used CTRL + V for pasting in a
Command Prompt?
May I ask which version of Windows supports that?

<chuckle>

That's one of the reasons I wrap CMD and PowerShell with Console2. I get
rid of its toolbar though. Unfortunately you cannot use it on Vista/2008.

I tried searching to see if anybody else has had this problem, and the only
things that came up were no actually having Quick Edit mode enabled (did you
try defaults and well?), or one person that had it 'solved' by disabling
UAC, which would suggest some sort of permissions problem.

If it was a persmissions problem, that could have been done by your admin
through Group Policy. How come you can run as admin though?

Yes.. it places a less than useful symbol plus the letter V in the box, but
at least you have something..

You might want to disable UAC as suggested. I have UAC off here, so 99% of
everything works as it should

Mike, I've never been able to use Ctrl+v in a command prompt. I use
XP SP2/3 and Vista UAC on and off.

Does this look familiar to you? ------------------> ^V

Yes and no..

Paste does not work in the CP Window unless UAC is off for me.. CTRL + V
produces ^V regardless of UAC setting..

All,
Thanks for your responses! A couple of replies:

The strange thing is paste works normally in command prompts on my
colleague's
systems. We all have the same Group Policy settings. And even in my
system,
it was working fine till a couple of months ago. Each of us have Admin
rights
on our respective systems.

Mike, you are really great! Thanks a lot for your "help" !!
Oh btw, by "Paste" i meant that the contents of the clipboard must be
copied
on to the command prompt window ! May be you have a totally different
idea
on what "Paste" means ....

May be turning OFF UAC is a temporary solution, but as soon as the
Group Policy
settings are synced from the domain, UAC will be automatically turned
ON again !
Doesn't help much.

From what I have been able to pick up on the Internet, nobody appears sure
of what causes the problem..

Because the CP window is probably one of the least used functions, I can't
really see anybody breaking their neck to find a solution either.

It seems that those who do have the problem resort to re-installing the OS.
I guess that it all depends on how important pasting into the CP window is
to you..

If it works, then at least you have identified the problem area... try
it and see what happens.

Huh? That really depends on the level of the user. So you think
Sysinternals develops all its ultilities, like the PSTools pack, for fun?
What is the Resource Kit and Support Tools packs for? Why did Microsoft
develop Powershell, to give Windows some powerful scripting abilities like
Linux always has had? If you go to the server newsgroups, a lot of the
posts are about the command line.

This is a Vista group.. desktops/workstations, not servers..

So? That has little to do with it. It's just that more advanced stuff is
discussed there.
