Past Items [Customize Notification area]

What are the Past Items in the Customize Notification area for and what
do they do? Some of the "Items" shown in this area on my computer just
don't make sense ie 'Idle', 'One document(s) pending for user' and
'Shockwave player- 90%'
If as I suspect these are redundant, how can I eliminate them?
