Since renewing my computer recently, the updated version of windows does not
allow me to use passwords in the browser address line like I previously
could, I.E www.password:password@then the address, it does not recognise this
line of address. Is there anything I am able to do to change this ?

Thanks for the info Alan, however after visiting the link don't really
understand how i disable it, maybe I'm a bit dim but not sure how to get to
the place to make the change they discribe ?

I must be missing something here. Why would you want to include your
password in the URL? Is the security of your password not a matter of
importance?

If you don't understand the Registry and the use of Regedit to modify
it, perhaps you shouldn't try and make the change?

If you really want to make the change and cannot do it yourself, I
guess I could make up a .reg file to do it.
Let me know.

OK. This is how I would do it without using Regedit interactively:
Please be careful and follow my instructions exactly. Ask here if not
sure of anything or email me.

Make up a file from the lines below. Copy into a file called fix.reg
which should be created in Notepad. Do not retype, copy in case of
errors. The 1st line in the file is the line REGEDIT4

Make sure your mail or news reader does not add any spaces to the end
of a line.

Please make certain the long data line starting with [ and ending with
] does not wrap at the space in "Internet Explorer"

The last line must be blank.
Right-click fix.reg and select Merge.

-----copy below this line fix.reg------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_HTTP_USERNAME_PASSWORD_DISABLE]
"iexplore.exe"=dword:00000000
"explorer.exe"=dword:00000000
\\disable the new behaviour for username:password@
\\see KB article 834489

---- end file above here

Thank you for the help Alan, seems to work fine. To answer Teds question, its
just a matter of time saving, if you have to go in and out of password
protected sites often retyping every password takes up time and extreamly
boring, maybe I'm just too lazy:-)

It's just my opinion, of course, but I feel that the security of my
passwords is worth the extra little effort.

:

This is two years old but should still be valid:

"username:password@" information.

A security update is available that modifies the default behavior of
Internet Explorer for handling user information in HTTP and in HTTPS
