In order to go to safe mode with my Dimension 4600xpsp2 I must temporarily
remove password protection -this has een debated here before re default not
having one etcBUT, Could I enter the bios and disable the admin password
thereby getting into safe mode even if I have the nachine pasword protected.
IMy thinking is the "original"NO password that I messed up by giving it a
password years ago would be negated.

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to blank the default
"Administrator" account passord in Windows XP. If that is the case, no, the
BIOS password is not the same. To blank the BIOS you remove the battery, and
boot, then replace, and reconfigure the BIOS settings. To remove the default
"Administrator" account password (demanded by Recovery Console, or a boot to
Safe Mode) you would need a boot disk.

Mark - thanx for the distiction, I'll leave the bios password alone. I read
the link you provided + for a non tech it was hard. Is it saying I can
retrieve the original Administrator" account passord in Windows XP? I hope
I am clear in stating I wish to use safe mode w/o having to remove password
protection each time. I was hoping a tech could pablum feed what I am not
understanding. Is there a way to 'correct' the damage I did when I first set
up the pc and mistakenly entered a password? Would reformat /reinstallation
fix this? Thanx for the patience.
 
I don't really follow what you want. You are saying you can remove password
protection, but you cannot remove it. If you set the "Administrator" account
password to be blank, the logon to the account requires no password. It is
done in User Accounts, in Control Panel.
 
In fairness to you let me do my best to clarify;
1-I can password protect my pcvia users
2-If I try to use safe mode and get to the part that says password, exactly
as my screen looks like when I boot up and have to enter the password, no
matter what I fill in or leave blank the screen freezesand I have to hard
boot to escape.
3-I f iI remove the password protection via users in the control pane;l I
THEN can get into safe mode.
4-I am trying to be able to use safe mode with out removing password protect
each time.
5-What I may not be undestanding is: I fthe pc is password protected you
cannot use safe mode-if it is not password pprotected you can use safe mode.
6- the only 'bug' was, I was told about an 'original' choice for admin
password which is zero by default and I maty have put a pssword in I cannot
remember.
**I want to get into safe mode even if the pc is password protected via
users. Is this possible?
 
My first post gave you the page that tells you where to download a disk that
will blank the default "Administrator" account password. This would then work
in safe mode.
 
I'm sorry to have taken your time but I am not smart enough to do this
removal of the admin password but at least aware enough of my limitations so
I will remove the password each time I use safe mode. I did learn from your
information and I thank you.
 
Yes, it's certainly a technical procedure. Passwords are complex by design.
You're welcome, and hopefully you may run into a techie with the inclination
to do it for you.
