In these circumstances you might be better doing a clean install, as (unless
you bought from a trusted Power Seller) you have no way of knowing what
malware or other trash might be on it.

To get into it, I would suggest trying rebooting , pressing F8 at startup
and selecting Safe mode. You may then find you can logon as Administrator.
Otherwise, the Linux-based "NT Password Editor CD" usually works.

If the person from whom you "acquired" the computer cannot give you
the passwords, (and the installation CDs for the OS and any other
software installed), you'd be wise to immediately check with the
appropriate law enforcement agencies to ensure that you haven't
inadvertently purchased stolen property.

Anyway, it's a moot point. With second-hand computers, perhaps
even if acquired from a family member or friend, but especially if
acquired from a stranger, your wisest course of action would definitely
be to format the hard drives and start fresh. You don't want to get in
trouble because the original owner may have filled the hard drive with
kiddie porn, or have problems because the original owner
downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.

Computer - used... (I'd say "especially from eBay", but really - it could be
from your mother/brother/grandfather) - you should wipe it and use whatever
method available to you to install from scratch. Then *you* know what is on
it and so on.
