I created a password to log in to Windows XP. When I have tried to log in
using this password - the password is not accepted and there are no options
available for me to change/reset the password and I cannot get onto my PC at
all (I am currently using my laptop) Is there a way around this?

In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly tapping
the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right
menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Once
in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account. The
default password is a blank.

In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen, do
Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in
"Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up Windows.

If you reset the built-in Administrator account's password in Home or have
Pro and don't remember the password, use NTpasswd to change the built-in
Administrator account's password to a blank.

Then go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel and set passwords that
you will remember and make other desired changes.

Thank you so much Malke, it has worked, we are no computer experts and are
going on holiday on Saturday. We spent all night last night putting music on
I-tunes for our I-pod; so were really worried that we weren't going to be
able to get back into it! You have really helped us - thank you!!!!!!

I'm delighted that I was able to help and I'm thankful that you took the
time to write back.

Please make sure you also know how to back up your songs and other precious
data by burning to CD-R or DVD-R. If you are unsure, then have a
knowledgeable friend teach you. This has nothing to do with your password
problem; it is only that you seem such a nice person and I would hate for
you to lose important stuff because you didn't back up. So please just take
this as a caring caution.

Have a lovely holiday.
