Password

I know this is a slightly random question, but does
anyone know how to initiate a password on startup. I
suppose what I am asking is what do I need to press on
startup in order to enter the startup menu in DOS, and
setup a password. The password system in Windows XP is
not good at all, and the manual that came with the
computer has no mention of what I am looking for. I have
a Sony Vaio desktop.
