I'm confused. The W2k administrator password is set in software. Why are
you talking about opening the computer?

At exactly what point when you try to boot are you asked for a password?
If W2k has loaded, it is asking you for its administrator (or other
user) password. This would happen a minute or so after the black BIOS
screen (the power-on self-test, or POST) disappears, and after a few
other screens have told you to wait while W2k loads itself.

Are you possibly talking about a BIOS password? If you are, you can
erase the current BIOS settings by (usually) removing the small
clock-type battery on the mainboard for a few minutes. On some machines
there's a jumper (or switch) that clears the BIOS; you'd need the manual
to locate it and see how to use it.

It's best to carefully record all the BIOS settings before you clear
them. It makes restoring the settings much easier.

What I meant was, "once I turned on my computer, it gives
me an teh little box-screen for USER NAME and PASSWORD(
which I was given), otherwise windows does not load, stays
on that screen" . This is the password I want to change!

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

That's the W2k logon password. W2k is there and ready to go.

There are a few things you can try that have been suggested in posts in
several of these MS W2k newsgroups. The default installation name is
Administrator. Use that. Then for password, try blank, single digits,
and some other simple ones. You might get lucky. Try scanning the
newsgroups for posts dealing with lost/forgotten/howrecover password.

If all else fails, you'll have to reinstall the OS.

OOPS! I just reread this post...and I'm still not sure whether that's a
BIOS/POST request or the standard W2k request. You'll have to be
extremely precise about exactly what you see, and exactly when, from the
moment you power up. Meanwhile, disregard my post of a minute ago.
