Recently aquired a PC with Windows 2000 Prof..
I don't know the previous owner's password. I was told I
could get around it by using "administrator. Don't really
know what I'm doing. Can someone point me in the right
direction?
Reformat the drive and install Windows 2000 Pro using the installation
CD media that should have been supplied if you *really* did indeed
purchase a license for Windows 2000. Even if Windows 2000 got
pre-installed, you should get some media to reinstall it (since hard
drives do crash and users do get virus infected). If the OS was
pre-installed for you, try using a blank password when logging on under
the Administrator username. I suspect you used to use a 95-based
Windows. NT-based Windows is a whole different animal. It's not an OS
upgrade. It's an OS change.
And what reason does the system seller give who pre-installed Windows
for you who is also refusing to divulge the password for the
Administrator account? Sounds like you have been ripped off. The
seller sold you only the hardware. You might have a pirated copy of the
software. If the software has been pirated then maybe the hardware is
stolen, too. If the seller continues to refuse to cooperate, tell them
that you will be talking to the police on how to charge them with fraud
(and then do it).
