Password won't work

I entered a password to keep my sisters from snooping on my account, I'm sure of the password, after all I had to confirm it so it was activated, only when I try to go into my account it asks me if I forgot my password! It just won't take it... We tried reinstalling window from the CD but it won't boot. It used to work the times something was jammed (remember that virus last year?) but now it doesn't find the CD in my D: drive.

Any way I can get my computer to work?*whine whine sob*

Do you have a full Windows program CD or an upgrade? Do you have the
original disk used to configure you computer? Did it come with them
(everyone should, but some don't).

At this point I am going to guess the best bet is to reformat your C:
drive and hope it is not damaged, and reinstall Windows.

Doing this means it will be like a new machine, all your personal files
will be lost, everything you have downloaded will be lost. It means
starting from scratch.

I may be wrong and it may be possible to salvage what you have, but it
is difficult from here to tell.

It would be helpful if you could tell us what version of Windows you
have and what version(s) you may have upgraded from.

I have the Quick restore cd for windows xp ( I'm running on that) but the problem is on the other pc and we can't even boot the cd, it doesn't seem to find it. And we can't reformat the C: drive because the comp doesn't recognize my password...

There are several tricks that may be able to handle the situation, but I
am not an expert in it and the way I work is try this and see the results,
then based on the results try something else until the answer is there.

Have you tried booting in safe mode?

Hi Maya,

Before you do anything drastic, check the status of your {caps lock} and {num lock} keys. They may have been activated when you
typed in your password. This is especially important if you are using a laptop with en embedded numeric keypad.

If you get no joy there, try telling Windows yes when it ask if you forgot your password. It should ask you a security question
that you chose when you first setup the system, then let you into Windows.

If that doesn't work and there is another account on the system that has administrator access, use that to get into the system
and create a new profile. Note that you will have to 'Take Ownership' of the old account's data and move it to the new account.

If that doesn't work, then go into the BIOS and change the boot order so that the CDROM is the 1st bootable device.

Note that it will not let you do a repair install without the password, so you will have to do a clean install. Keep in mind
though that when you do a clean install, it wipes out all of your settings, programs and data.

Ciao . . .
