does anyone know how to set up a password for desktop outlook in windows xp
home edition?

Outlook is part of Office, not Windows, so you would best post Outlook
questions in microsoft.public.outlook.

If you're using Outlook Express, that's part of IE and has its own groups -
try microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress. A good website
for information on OE is http://www.insideoe.com/

That said, you can't password protect Outlook itself, but you can
password-protect your PST (personal folders) file. Right click on the
top-level folder in your navigation pane, go to properties, advanced, and
you should see a Change Password buton.
