We have a site with pages that link to various Word and Excel files
for people to download and complete and submit as reports. We've been
doing this for a long time.

Recently we discovered that some users were being prompted for a
Username and Password before the file would open. If they clicked
"cancel" once or "OK" twice, the file opened normally. The files are
not protected and this problem just popped up.

It seems to be happening only on XP Pro machines and not on W2K or on
XP Home. SP2 has been installed on the problem machines and everybody
is using Office 2000, with all the upgrades/service packs.

If you want to test the behavior, I have a test folder set up on the
site at www.gwrra-regionf.org/test with files in Word, Excel and
Adobe. The problem only occurs with the Word and Excel files.

Any help is appreciated.

Double check those machines and make sure that all Office SRs and SPs have been installed, as the
issue was fixed via one of the SR/SP for Office.

We are having the same issue on our intranet.

I am reasonably sure that all our PCs have the latest SRs & SPs installed. I
did check my own machine to make sure of it (and it's current), but I am
still prompted for a password when trying to open a .doc, .xls, or .ppt file
from a web page within our intranet.

This is a new problem.
Thanks

Have you set the internet to be in a trusted zone?
