I am using Windows XP at home on our family computer. Not
being real knowledgable about the way Windows XP works, I
allowed my teenager to set it up and now everything is
password protected (including his stuff). As a parent I
would like to be able to check what kind of stuff he has
been downloading, e-mails received, etc. How do I get
around his password?

You cannot "get around" a password in Windows XP.
All you can do is ask your child for his passwords,
then be prepared for an invigorating family discussion.

Log on as Administrator. You can then see everything, AND, change HIS
password so he can't log in!
