Password protection

Is there anyway to prevent users allowing spyware to install. The beta
version pops up and asks but that is the limit of the security.

Reason I ask is that I would like to use this system at work where I have no
end of idiots installing games etc on win xp often putting spyware on it as
well. It would be handy if it would ask for a password (that obviously only
I know) before allowing/blocking stuff. Is this in the beta and I am missing
it or maybe could it be included in the final release

cheers

That's not a very useful reply is it?

If, like me, the original poster isn't an administrator,
shares the PC with 2 other members of his team along with
2 other teams on opposing shifts (a total of 9 users in
any 24hr period) then perhaps, like me, he'd like to
conduct legitimate work business on a second-hand work PC
without first having to spend time clearing out the
registry of all the crap his lazy ba***rd colleagues
managed to install during the previous 16hrs he's been off-
duty when they should've been carrying out planned factory
maintenance instead.

There, I feel better already...

The current product simply isn't designed to do what you and the OP wish to
do.

Microsoft has said that they will eventually provide a version suitable for
corporate deployment which will cost money. I would expect it to be able to
accomplish what the two of you (and most other network admins and corporate
IT staff) would like. What it will cost and whether it'll be affordable for
your businesses, I've no idea until they announce it and provide pricing.

Making the users limited users can help, but it might also make it
impossible for the users to run current line of business software that they
need to run. There's no simple solution. In a domain, you can use group
policy to lock machines down to pretty much any desired degree--but this
requires a decision at the management level, and some effort. It isn't
something that a given employee can easily implement to protect his own
shared machine, for example.

The current beta product is suitable for home users, and not even all of
those--it doesn't do well with multiple user situation.

I would expect to see some significant changes to the application as the
beta progresses--but I'm dubious about anything being provided that would
accomplish what adcb is looking for--but they could surprise me, too!

Don't seem to be a good idea to promote yourself as an hiden-administrator.
Think about any holidays or sys upgrade when you are not here?

Yeh figured it might be just home use only with a paid corporation version
around at sometime.

Sadly I cannot use the limited account option just for the reason you said,
my version of novell GroupWise throws a fit when on a limited account. Ah
well, back to the drawing board

thanks for the advice

You're welcome! Microsoft is aware of the issues with limited account
usage. (both the issues with this beta product, and the issues with
line-of-business software in general.) This isn't the kind of issue where
it can be fixed in a short time by Microsoft acting alone, though.
