before windows starts.

TIA

Your BIOS has an option to set a password at boot. It can be defeated
by removing the case and clearing the CMOS but, it is fine for most
purposes. You can purchase a band with padlock to secure your case
quite cheaply if you want to keep someone out who is handy with a
screwdriver and knows their way around a motherboard out. Check your
motherboard manual or download a copy of it from the manufacturer.

No computer is ever really pasword protectable..

There is the Cmos eraser one that was mentioned..

For Win95 to win 98 (and me) there is a way to delete, or disable teh
password, and even for Win XP there is programs that youy can get that
totaly removed passwords....

there are some clever registry hacks, and ways to make the computer more
secure (like disabling the cancel button in windows logon so password is
mandatory, AND disable checking floppy drive first for bootup AND password
protect the setup for the bios, and disable the function startup keys.. that
is about the safest you'll be able to get that i know of.. however, clever
people can still get around it (linux may be a little harder to crack
though).

Good Luck

Er... if the kb is disabled, how would you reckon on entering a PW?

Are you being deliberately silly? You unplug it and plug in an unlocked kb.

My favourite error message was on boot: 'keyboard not detected; press
any key to continue'. How I larfed.

Does your BIOS have a password option?

(Does winME override the bios password?)

The bios password on mine only protects the bios menu.

Windows loads without any effect.

Go back into the BIOS and check the settings. You will probably find
that you can choose between BIOS protection or boot protection.

.... or "Supervisor" and "User" protection (depending on your BIOS).
You need to enable "User" protection to require system logon.

If you can't... DL the DOS fix for WinMe,
http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/a_dos_me/
....which gives you a real DOS boot.

Then DL BootSentry v4a and corresponding DOS plugin
from my Security1 page....

Cheers!
