Password Protection for files

I am using external memory and I am trying to find out if there is a way to
protect this information. Memory sticks, and external hard drives have
become very large and usful, but could be easily mispaced or lost. Is there
a way to password protect the information on this tyoe of media?
 
There are USB sticks with software already installed that provide password
protection.

Google secure USB drives.

There is also third party software that will do this.
