password protecting Internet Explorer shortcut

Is there a way to password protect the desktop shortcut for Internet
Explorer? The purpose of this is to only allow authorized users to access
the Internet. Others can use the computer, but would not be able to access
the Internet without knowing the password. If this is not configurable
through the OS, does anyone know of a 3rd-party software that would achieve
the same thing?
(I have tried to achieve this already via content control and the results
were not satisfactory).

Hi,

Depending on your operating system, you may be able to enable
this through Group Policy. More information on how to go about
this is available here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/community/newsgroups/management/default.mspx

Further, you may try the Internet Explorer Admin kit:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ieak/default.mspx

Note: the above solution will not password restrict IE, but will
provide a means to ensure only specific users can access it.

If you have any other questions or comments, do not hesitate to
reply to this thread,

Best regards,

Altrus

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm sorry I didn't specify in the original post
- the computer I am working with iis Windows XP Service Pack 1 (not
connected to a network). So it looks like the Internet Explorer Admin Kit
may be the best solution. Have you had any experience with IEAK before? I
am interested in whether or not it has the security features I am looking for
(hard to tell from the website, but I will download and give it a try) . . .

Hello,
Just a note: if security is your main worry, you should strongly consider installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 so that even approved users won't get all sorts of pests through IE SP1's weak security.

Update . . . just tried your suggestion and it works beautifully. The only
problem is that you have to type in a password for every website you want to
access. What I am trying to achieve is a setup where, if a person knows the
password, they only have to enter it once (when they first open Internet
Explorer) and then they will be able to access the Internet. Any further
ideas? I'll try the IEAK as well, and see what that can do.
