Hi

I would be grateful if anyone could recommend a USB data key with built in
password protection or third party software which can be applied to any data
key.

I would prefer to have recommendations based on your own experience of use.

Many thanks.

Ian

Put the TrueCrypt software in a small folder. Create a single
encrypted container the size of the entire remaining space on the drive.
TrueCrypt will then turn it into a encrypted partition with a new drive
letter. This is free, high-performance, proven software.

Drat -- it says that you have to have administrator privileges to run it in
traveller mode. So you couldn't run it at a public library, etc.

If you are willing to type a key into a public terminal, than you
can simply use any file encryption to decrypt an archive. Re-encrypt
afterwards and wipe the free space.

To be relatively secure you would need a storage device with a keyboard
to enter your key.
