Can anyone tell me how to password protect only specific cells on a
spreadsheet from being tampered with but leave the other cells open for
imput?

Thank you kindly

You can have cells locked or unlocked. The default is locked. You can change
the locked state via Format|Cells|Protection tab.

But once you've locked cells (and unlocked others), you can protect the
worksheet via Tools|Protection|Protect sheet.

These work hand in hand. Locked cells on protected sheets can't be changed by
anyone.

But protected sheets cause other problems--in xl2000, you can't change
formatting, insert/delete rows or columns. You'll want to test to see if
there's anything important that you don't want to lose.

(When you upgrade to xl2002, you'll see that this newer version allows a finer
protection scheme--allow some users to edit some cells (by passwords).)

By default all cells are locked when Tools>Protection>Protect Sheet is
enabled.

To lock just certain cells on a worksheet, select all cells with CRTL + A.
Format>Cells>Protection> uncheck "locked".

Go back to the worksheet and select the cells you wish to be locked.
Format>Cells>Protection check "locked".

Now Tools>Protection>Protect Sheet. Provide a password to unprotect.......DO
NOT forget the password or you will be back here again asking how to unprotect
a passworded worksheet. <g>

Under XL2002(XP) there are new features with the Sheet Protection
that allow certain functions to be carried out on Protected sheets. Also
permissions can be given for editing rights.

Highlight the entire spreadsheet, click "Format",
choose "Cell", click "Protection", and clear up
the "Lock" box.
The above process will unlock the entire spreadsheet.
To lock certain cells, highlight those cells, then
perform the same above process but when you get to
the "Protection" portion of it, click on the box next to
Lock to put a check mark into it.
The last step is to click
on "Tools", "Protection","Protect sheet". Enter your
passowrd twice then save your document.
