We have files we'd like to keep the kids out of (business
related) on a home LAN. How can we create a log in
screen so that when you try to open a shared file, it
will ask you for a log in name & password?

We have two machines running XP pro and one with XP
home. (The work related files that need protecting are
on one of the XP pro machines.)

Thanks!

Make sure you have good passwords and have a password on the administrator
account as well.
Use NTFS as your disk format.
Make sure you've created all the user accounts & passwords identically on
this computer as the other computer(s).
Set security in the folders you wish in their properties - security tab.

I want to force anyone trying to access the files on
Computer 1 (XP Pro) to log in & enter password.

We've tried all this, I think. We either get unsecured
access or no access. Can you point me to more detailed,
step-by -step instructions?

Thanks

No...you can't do this. WinXP (and other NT-based OSes) do not use password
protection on folders. NTFS security is far better anyway....

That's what you'll get. Either access, read-only access, or no access (with
some other granular permissions in there as well).

What is your end goal? Put things people shouldn't have access to in secured
folders. Put things they should have access to, in folders they can access.
