Alex

Hello,
I would like to password protect a shared folder on a
simple workgroup network. I am running Windows XP Pro.
I've disabled simple networking, got the right security
options, etc. but users from other computers can still get
into the folder without problems. what I want to happen
is when someone from the network tryes to get into that
folder it would ask them for user name and password.
I need to do it using some kind of permissions, etc.
because I am backing up that folder (locally) and need
unrestricted access locally.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Alex,

by default anyone can read all shares or folder. You need to specify who can
and can't access and read something.

Right click the folder that you would like to protect and select properties.
Click on Security Tab and remove Everyone and Add e.g. Administrator or your
account Full Access...

Hi Mike,
Thanks for answering,
I can do that, but what I need is to PASSWORD protect a
folder. When someone wants to see it they would have to
type in a user name and password.

is it possible?

thanks

Create local user where your share is e.g. "ShareUser" assign him a password
"UserShare"

Remove all users from Security Tab and add Local Administrator and ShareUser
and give them Fill Access (or you could only give e.g. Read permission to
ShareUser)...

Logon to other PC and try to connect to the share... You should get new
windows to enter username and password to connect to the share...

At least passwords on PCs in workgroup should be different or you won't see
the password windows. In case Username and Password on both PCs are the same
PC1 will sent PC2 this username and password and you will not be prompted to
enter username and password for the share...

You mean you want it to be like the Win98 sharing style
where you can assign a password for each shared folder?
That is not what is happening on Win XP cause it is based
on User lever access control. not Share level access
conrol. each user is added to the permission when you want
them to access your shared resources. User level access
control is available on Win98 when you are in a domain.

goodluck hope this answers your prob.
