I just purchases a used hp laptop with windows vista home premium. When I
turn it on it wants a paasword from a user named gary. I am unable to get the
the password from previous owner. How do I get by this ? I can't get to the
desktop until I get passed this . Any suggestions from anyone

Reinstall the operating system using the restore method provided with the
laptop. This may be a set of restore CDs/DVDs or a restore partition etc
see the documentation that came with the laptop.
If the previous owner installed Windows Vista then he MUST have given you
the media used and product activation key otherwise you are not actually
licensed for the OS on that laptop - in which case go buy your own copy and
reinstall.

If the person who sold you the computer cannot provide that
administrator password, and is not someone you know and trust, you might
want to check with your local law enforcement agencies to verify that
the computer isn't stolen property.

Anyway, With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from
strangers but perhaps even if acquired from a family member or friend,
your wisest course of action would definitely be to format the hard
drives and start fresh. You don't want to get in trouble because the
original owner may have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have
problems because the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or
other malware.

If you don't care to take that basic precaution, Linux-based
password cracking utilities abound on the Internet, freely available to
anyone who can use Google.
