Hello Gang..! I'm the "data coordinator" at work, and in the past I put
together a couple old computers for the mechanics on the "floor" to use when
working on aircraft. I used my copy of XP Pro with just the generic
password of "admin" when re-booting the machines .., which usually just stay
"running" all the time. Well, some jerk shut-down one of the computers the
other night, and now "we" can't get back in..! Now, please.., not a long
list of what I should have done.., just an answer to any ways to get past
the present problem..!! Thanks..

I don't understand how this is a password problem. Since you yourself
set up the machines, simply input the password you assigned at that
time. What does "we can't get back in" mean? If you get an error
message, please quote the exact text. Otherwise, you need to be more
descriptive about what happens when you try.

In the meantime, here is general information about getting into a system
where the password has been forgotten:

If you have forgotten your password, if you have another user account
with administrative privileges you can log into that account and change
your original user account's password from the User Accounts applet in
Control Panel. If you don't have another account like this set up or
don't have the password to it, you'll need to log into the built-in
Administrator account.

In XP Pro, at the Welcome Screen do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the
classic Windows logon box. Type in "Administrator" and whatever password
you assigned when you set up Windows.

If you reset the built-in Administrator account's password and don't
remember the password, use NTpasswd to change the built-in Administrator
account's password to a blank.

Then go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel and set passwords
that you will remember and make other desired changes.

Simply log in using the built-in Administrator account (which
cannot be deleted) and modify the desired account(s) and use Start > Run
"control userpasswords2" to modify the desired account(s).

By design, the only way to log into the Administrator account of
WinXP Home is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login
dialog box.

Failing that, Linux-based password cracking utilities abound on the
Internet, freely available to anyone who can use Google.

Start your computer and immediately start tapping the F8 key until your PC
beeps.
When you see a menu with Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration and all
that, choose Safe Mode. Select the operating system to start safe mode with
and press Enter. Now, you should see another account called "Administrator".
Click on that account. Now, click on Start, go to Run, and type in "control
userpasswords2" without quotas. Press Enter. Choose the account you with the
problem and click on "Reset Password...", now set your password. Click OK
twice, reboot into normal mode, choose your username, type your password and
that's it! You're done!

Good Luck!

John.
