I am working on my website and trying to publish using Front Page 2003
remote website feature. I keep getting this error message " Unable to open
..... Possible causes: 1. Server may not have FP extensions installed (I
allready checked this and the server does have FP extensions installed, and I
even re-installed to be sure) 2. Server may be temporarilly out of service
(hosting people say the server is fine) 3. If connected through a proxy
server, the proxy settings may be incorrect (I don't exactly know what a
proxy server is, I don't think I am using one, I would know if I was, right?)
This is an imprtant clue;;It doesn't ask me for my username and
password...it's like it's being blocked or denied...

You may not know if a proxy is in use actually. A proxy is a server that
sits between you and the internet (or a destination on the internet) and
tries to block anything that it thinks may be an attack. If the web server
is a Windows Server running IIS, it's possible that a proxy may block an
authentication request in a very particular instance. IIS web servers
communicate passwords through an encryption method called NTLM. Programs
like IE and FrontPage can send passwords encrypted using NTLM
authentication. The problem is, certain proxy servers see this encrypted
information and then deny the request automatically. This is one possiblity
that matches your situation and does match it very closely as the proxy
server simply shuts things off in this type of matter. If your host or you
has the ability to change the directory security's authentication method,
set it to basic authentication and disable the NTLM authentication (also
known as Windows Authentication). This will send the passwords in clear
text, but the proxy won't intervene. At least this is a good test to see if
it's a proxy server issue and then you can find out if your host may have a
proxy server or how to configure FP for their proxy server.

Hope this helps,
