Hi. I just networked 2 pc's together with a crossover cable. One of them is
winxp home, the other is win98. I am using tcp/ip. I can see either computer
and can setup a shared folder on the win98 machine which can be seen or
accessed on the xp machine, but when I share a folder on the xp machine and
try to even see if anything is available in network neighborhood on the
win98 machine, I get a password needed bo when I click on the name of the xp
machine. Does anyone know why this is?...I had a problem like this before
and didn't resolve it then. I don't have any passwords on either machine,
just 2 user accounts on the xp machine.
Any help is appreciated, thanks rick

You need to type in the user name that is set on the other machine, no
password and click OK.

Taff.........

You need to type in the password of either of the two accounts that
exist on the XP Home machine. Since you say you have no passwords set
can you just press enter?

Things would be a bit better if you could enable normal file sharing
(not simple file sharing) in XP Home but I don't think that's possible
is it? (explorer, tools, folder options, view)

If you don't want the password box to pop up can you tick a remember
password tick box? Alternatively, just make sure the username and
password of the account you have logged into the Win98 machine match
an account on the XP Home machine.

Thanks,

Bruce.

Hi Bruce, There is no password on the xp accounts, thats the strange thing.
thanks rick

I have to admint I've never used XP Home before.

I think they have tried to make Home XP easier to use than XP Pro, but
to me they have just made it more complicated.

Does an administrator account exist on XP Home?

What if you logon to the Win98 PC with the same username as one of the
accounts on the XP Home machine?

Can you modify the Access Control Lists on the share ("NTFS Security"
and "share permissions")? I guess you can't since you can only have
"simple file sharing" on XP Home.

I guess it's over to someone else...

Thanks,

Bruce.

You need to use the log on name of the person on the xp machine. If that
person has a password set then you will need to use that password as well
