password length

We have an AD 2003 environment. Currently our passwords
are 6 characters in length and our domain authentication
is used for web authoring, files shares and logging into
remote desktop to servers. If I change the group security
policy to have passwords of 8 in length will this have
any impact on the current users accessing resources until
time for their passwords to be renewed? In other words
will everything work fine until the current passwords
expire?
