What program would anyone recommend to password protect a C.D. that
contains confidential text? Can the password program be part of the
CD or would it have to reside in my hard? I would like to take the
C.D. to another computer.
You cannot compress the actual file system, so you will need to rely on
third party software that supports encryption on some level. PGP
(
http://www.pgpi.org/) comes recommended by a lot of people, although I have
not tried it myself.
Apart from that you may use the encryption features of a suitable program
that is likely to reside on all computers you wish to use your CD on.
Microsoft Word, for instance, has a password feature which should make it
usable for encrypting text documents. You may also use a compression
program, such as WinZip/RAR/Ace/whatever, which usually has some sort of
encryption support.
Personally I like to use a program called Crypt Edit
(
http://www.polyedit.com/downloads.shtml) for the purposes you describe. It
is free and specifically designed for editing encrypted text files. It is
free, it is small, and it should not be a problem to simply put the program
on the CD with your documents and run the program straight off the CD,
giving you full access to all the encrypted documents.
