Password encrypted in IE

I'd like to know what encryption algorithm used for form's password
when I log on o. any site ?
oo. my own computer ?

I am using Vista Utimate and IE 7

It's not what algorithm is used, but also how it is used. I know a
couple of vendors of USB devices that claimed to use AES-256 but used it
in such a way that it was easily breakable.

Also, I don't think you question belongs to a general newsgroup like this.

The flavor of Windows is irrelevant here. The IE bits are the same in
all flavors.

I don't think they are actually encrypted. There is a user javascript
script that can be added to IE7Pro, that reveals the masked password when
you mouse over it.

Because information is power, and well informed users can make powerful
decisions. Knowing how strong is the key store that IE uses is very
useful so that people can decide to use it or revert to using other
products like PasswordSafe, for example.

In my case, given the track record of weak encryption algorithms and
weak key storages created by Microsoft, prefer to use tools like
PasswordSafe that are open source and cross-platform.

decisions. Knowing how strong is the key store that IE uses is very
useful so that people can decide to use it or revert to using other
products like PasswordSafe, for example.
